Sumi Ink, Encaustic Paint, Love Letters, Rice Paper
Using rice paper, sumi ink, and encaustic paint, I've created a bridge between what was said and what was wished for. The project began with a simple invitation: I asked people to write letters to people they regret never having told "I love you" to – the words that stayed trapped behind hesitation, pride, or timeTheir responses ranged from teenage hearts burning with first love, marriages that crumbled under silence, a secret affairs that never found daylight, family rifts that grew too wide to cross, and friendships that slipped away. Each writer shared a photograph of their person – the face that still lingers in their mind. I've drawn these ghost faces onto translucent thin rice paper, each stroke of sumi ink and encaustic paint capturing not just their features, but the weight of words left unsaid. The fat encaustic paint soaking into the tissue thin paper, making it easier to see through, Hung an inch from the gallery wall, so that the light can reflect off the white walls and create a kind of backlit image. The portraits hang like prayer flags beside the letters, creating a space for meditation on missed opportunity,
